Antiques valued and purchased, an English speaking dealer in the French Alps

Furniture, art, jewellery and complete house contents — Annecy, Geneva, Lyon, the Alpine resorts and the French Riviera.

We value and purchase antiques, works of art, jewellery, luxury goods and the entire contents of a property.

A first estimate is given within twenty-four hours from photographs; visits and valuations are made without charge or obligation, at your home; and settlement is made in full on the day of collection.

Everything is conducted in English, French paperwork included

Expertise

and Method

From valuation to the final buyer

Valuing correctly is only half of the profession; the object must then be sold well. To establish a true market price we draw upon subscription databases of auction results, upon documentary research and upon genuine tests of the market. For the sale itself we bring together skills rarely found under one roof: cataloguing, photography, the instruments of modern commerce, and the daily assistance of cabinetmakers, clockmakers and specialist restorers. Above all, a national and international network of collectors and buyers allows us, in the great majority of cases, to place an object directly with its final owner — however distant — without an intermediary taking a share. Our margin is stated plainly: between thirty and forty per cent. It is drawn from the value a well-conducted sale creates, not from what the seller would have obtained alone.

A trained eye

Valuing an antique admits of no approximation. A repair skilfully concealed, a substituted material, an accomplished copy, an effaced mark: the detail that escapes notice may alter a value tenfold. Such judgement is not improvised. It is formed over years and thousands of objects examined, studied and sold, and supported by a network of experts and fellow dealers consulted whenever prudence requires it.

Leaving France

A departure rarely leaves time to spare. Returning to Britain or moving on elsewhere, one must empty a house within weeks, often from a distance, and always among unfamiliar formalities. We are accustomed to it. A single visit establishes what carries value, what may be taken away without charge, and what requires clearance; an inventory follows, then an offer. Furniture, paintings, silver, jewellery, motor cars — an entire household may be settled in one operation, and the property left empty.

Discretion and proper dealing

Parting with familiar possessions is never a trivial act, and matters of inheritance least of all. Discussions remain confidential, appointments are arranged discreetly, and no transaction is publicised. We hold the register required of French dealers, issue proper invoices, and settle in full — by transfer, cheque or cash — on the day the goods are collected. Nothing remains to be understood afterwards.

What we purchase

Furniture of every period, from Haute Époque to twentieth-century design; paintings, drawings, engravings and posters; porcelain, faience, glass and Asian works of art; silver, table services and canteens of cutlery; clocks, watches and jewellery; fine leather goods and couture; books, coins and medals; lighting, curiosities and folk art; and the complete contents of a house, a chalet or an estate. A single object is as welcome as an entire property.

Where we travel

We travel each week throughout the Rhône-Alpes region: Annecy, Chambéry, Aix-les-Bains, Grenoble, Lyon, Albertville, Évian and Thonon, as well as the resorts of Savoie and Haute-Savoie — Megève, Courchevel, Méribel, Val d’Isère and Chamonix. We attend Geneva for purchases.

From our second premises in Cannes we serve the French Riviera: Nice, Antibes, Cap-Ferrat, Mougins, Monaco, Menton and Saint-Tropez.

A few photographs sent by email or WhatsApp are enough for a first opinion, given within twenty-four hours; a visit follows at a time of your choosing, and settlement is made on collection. Estimates and visits are free of charge and carry no obligation.
